Golf Tee Selection Guide: Sizes, Driver Height and Materials

golf tee selection guide: illustrative care and setup scene

This golf tee selection guide separates the length of a tee from the height of the ball above the ground. Choose a tee that can support the intended setup, then adjust insertion depth for the club and ground conditions. A longer tee does not require you to tee the ball higher.

How high should you tee up a driver?

A practical starting point is to have roughly half the ball above the crown when the driver rests on the ground beside it. Treat this as a starting reference, not a rule that guarantees the same result for every player. GOLFTEC’s tee-height lesson explains this relationship and how different heights can change the shot. Use your own club as the visual reference rather than copying a measurement from a different driver.

Three measurements that are easy to confuse

Total tee length

Total tee length

The complete tee, including the part that goes into the ground. This is the length commonly printed on a pack.

Exposed tee height

Exposed tee height

The part left above the ground after insertion. It changes when the same tee is pushed in farther or left higher.

Ball-to-club relationship

Ball-to-club relationship

Compare the ball with the grounded clubhead. This is a setup reference, separate from the length printed on the packet.

The diagrams explain relationships; they are not scale drawings or a fitting prescription. Check the ball position from a consistent viewing angle when comparing setups.

Golf tee size chart: use length as a capacity choice

Nominal length example Approximate metric length What to check
2 1/8 inches 54 mm Whether it supports the lower setup you use and anchors securely
2 3/4 inches 70 mm Whether the exposed length suits your intended club setup
3 1/4 inches 83 mm Whether you need extra length above or below the ground
4 inches 102 mm Whether the extra length is useful for your actual setup and permitted use

These are length conversions, not a universal club-to-tee chart. Nominal lengths and available models vary. Color codes belong to particular product ranges; a yellow or white tee does not have one worldwide standardized length.

A repeatable practice check

  • Start with the club and ball you normally use.
  • Set an initial height with the grounded clubhead as a reference.
  • Hit several shots from the same setup and observe contact and flight.
  • Change one setup variable at a time. Avoid changing height, ball position and swing intent together.
  • If results remain inconsistent, ask a coach to assess the complete setup.

Do not turn a single well-struck shot into a guaranteed distance claim. Tee selection helps you reproduce a setup; it does not guarantee extra yards, eliminate sidespin or compensate for every strike pattern.

Select the material around use and purchasing requirements

Material or construction Useful selection questions
Wood Is the grain, straightness, cup finish and print acceptable on the sample?
Bamboo Is the actual material and surface finish specified? Are any environmental claims supported for the finished item?
Plastic Which resin and construction are supplied, and how does the selected sample behave during use?
Specialty or stepped tee Does the actual step, cup or mat interface match the intended setup?

Do not assume a fixed number of impacts for an entire material family. Likewise, “plant-based,” “biodegradable” and “compostable” describe different claims. Ask for evidence tied to the finished product and the stated disposal conditions before using those claims on packaging.

Golf Tee Selection Guide: Sizes, Materials, and Custom Brand

Plan custom branding without obscuring size information

Confirm the printable area on the actual tee, artwork orientation and legibility after finishing. If a pack includes more than one length, identify each length on the packaging. Keep the sample pack as the reference for later orders so a color change is not mistaken for a size change.

Review PASSEN custom golf tees for the product range. Specify quantity by SKU and clarify whether a quoted unit means an individual tee or a retail pack. Standard orders generally start at 200 per SKU and customization at 500 per SKU. The previously confirmed 100-pack bamboo tee item has a minimum of 500 individual tees, equivalent to five packs; do not read that as 500 packs.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 2 3/4-inch tee the height above the ground?

No. It normally describes the total tee length. Insertion depth determines how much remains exposed.

Should half the ball sit above the driver?

That is a useful starting reference with the driver grounded. Test the setup with your club and seek coaching if needed.

Does a longer tee automatically produce a higher ball flight?

No. Total length, exposed height and the delivered shot are different things. A longer tee can be inserted farther.

Are golf tee colors standardized by size?

No universal color convention should be assumed. Read the length on the specific product or pack.

Can one tee length suit every club?

It may cover several setups, but check stability and the height required for each club. A shorter tee may be more convenient for lower setups.

Can custom tees guarantee extra distance?

No. Do not treat a tee or material choice as a guaranteed distance improvement.
